Forward Rasheed Wallace was involved in the second trade in less than two weeks on Thursday, dealt to the Detroit Pistons in a three-team transaction. The Pistons sent Chucky Atkins, Lindsey Hunter and a No. 1 pick to the Boston Celtics, who in turn dealt Mike James to Detroit and Chris Mills to the Atlanta Hawks. Detroit also sent Zeljko Rebraca, Bobby Sura and a first-round pick (from Milwaukee) to the Hawks. Wallace, who played only one game with Atlanta, joins rebounding monster Ben Wallace in what is suddenly a very formidable frontcourt.
Rasheed (17.1 PPG, 6.6 RPG) should continue to post quality numbers in the Motor City, especially under the tutelage of fellow North Carolina alum and current Pistons coach Larry Brown. He could insert Rasheed into the starting lineup at small forward, where he will dominate opposing defenders in the post. Ben should continue to produce at a high level at power forward, though he could also move to center if Brown decides to use Mehmet Okur off the bench. Tayshaun Prince's role in the rotation could be based on matchups, so his consistency will waver. James will go from the starting point guard in Boston to a reserve with the Pistons, backing up starter Chauncey Billups, so his value obviously takes a hit. Detroit plays a four-game schedule against teams with losing records (Philadelphia, Chicago, Atlanta, L.A. Clippers), so Fantasy owners should be sure to activate their Pistons.
With James involved in the trade, the Celtics should move Atkins into their starting lineup. Rookie Marcus Banks could also see an increase in minutes, but his failures this season make him a risky Fantasy option. Hunter, who has played only 11 games this season due to a variety of injuries, will remain waiver-wire fodder. Boston faces Milwaukee and Toronto at the Fleet Center before heading to Canada for the second part of a home-and-home with the Raptors. Atkins and Banks aren't worth starting until their roles are more clearly established, but owners should keep Paul Pierce, Ricky Davis and Mark Blount active.
The Hawks roster has been almost completely restructured in an effort to open up significant cap room. Guards Jason Terry and Stephen Jackson should see a major increase in scoring opportunities for the remainder of the season, making both more valuable as Fantasy starters. Coach Terry Stotts does have some decisions to make in the frontcourt, where he could move Rebraca to the vacant power forward spot and keep Joel Przybilla at the five. With Alan Henderson ailing and little offensive firepower in the post, both Rebraca and Przybilla warrant consideration in larger Fantasy leagues. The Hawks face Philadelphia and Orlando at Philips Arena with a game at Detroit in between, so starting Terry and Jackson is advised. Rebraca and Przybilla also should be active in larger formats if they play prominent roles in Stotts' rotation. |

Raptors superstar Vince Carter is expected to miss two to four weeks after suffering a sprained left ankle in a game against the San Antonio Spurs. Injuries are nothing new to Carter, who hasn't played a full season since 1999-00. With Jalen Rose (hand) and Chris Bosh (ankle) also dealing with injuries, Morris Peterson and Alvin Williams suddenly become interesting Fantasy options. With four games on Toronto's schedule, owners should consider starting this duo while Carter and Rose are sidelined.
The Utah Jazz and Orlando Magic swapped shooting guards Thursday, with DeShawn Stevenson and Gordan Giricek changing places. Giricek will move into Utah's starting lineup at shooting guard, which makes him more valuable as a Fantasy player. Stevenson could emerge as a starter down the road, but he'll begin his tenure with Orlando as a backup shooting guard and small forward.
The Jazz also dealt Keon Clark and Ben Handlogten to Phoenix for Tom Gugliotta, draft picks and cash. The trade is much ado about nothing from a Fantasy perspective. Both Clark (ankle) and Handlogten (knee) are sidelined with injuries, and Gugliotta is no more than a reserve. |
