The Team History
The Warriors were established in 1946 in Philadelphia as a member of the Basketball Association of America. They were founded by Peter Tyrell and their first head coach was Eddie Gottlieb. They had a fantastic start to their career as they won the BAA Championship in their first season by defeating the Chicago Stags. Coach Gottlieb took over the team in 1951, after the BAA had become the NBA in 1949.
The Philadelphia Warriors won their first NBA Championship in 1956. It was their last in Philadelphia. Franklin Mieuli became a majority owner of the Warriors in 1962 and relocated them to San Francisco where they became the San Francisco Warriors. They won the Western Division title in 1964 but lost the NBA championship to the Boston Celtics. The 1971 season was their last as the San Francisco Warriors. In 1972, they were renamed the Golden State Warriors and played most of their home games in Oakland.
As the Golden State Warriors, they won the NBA Championship in 1975. They defeated the favorites Washington Bullets in the finals in what was considered one of the biggest upsets in NBA history. Their coach was Al Attles and players included Jamaal Wilkes, Rick Barry and Phil Smith. The team won the Division title in 1976 and though they continued to achieve good records, they did not win another Championship after that.
Over the last few years, the Warriors have been improving greatly. In April 2007, they made the playoffs again after a gap of twelve years. They defeated the Dallas Mavericks and became the first eighth seed to defeat a first seed team in a 7-game series. It was also their first playoff series win after sixteen years. They lost in the Conference Semi-finals to the Utah Jazz. With their playoff win, they became a strong team to reckon with again.
Their Home Arenas
The Warriors made many changes in their location and names. Naturally, their home arenas changed as well. They started off playing at the Philadelphia Arena from 1946 to 1962. In between, they also played at the Philadelphia Convention Hall from 1952. The Warriors had a few brief years at the Cow Palace from 1962 to 1964 and then from 1966 to 1971. For two years, they played their home games at the San Francisco Civic Auditorium as well as the USF War Memorial Gymnasium. They played at the San Jose Arena in the 1996 season. They currently play their home games at the Oracle Arena where they had played in earlier years as well. |
